Description
Oryx Shofar
This Shofar is made of an Oryx, which is from the Antelope family, an animal which was prevalent in Israel in the past. The horn itself is straight, therefore it is not customary at use is Synagogues. Some identify the Oryx Shofar as the instrument that was in use by the Levites at the Temple in Jerusalem. It is characterized by a trumpet-like powerful sound. It is impossible to remain indifferent to the powerful sound that erupts when blowing the Oryx Shofar. Some believe that the Oryx Shofar is the shofar used by the Levites in the Temple. Its straight form arouses controversy regarding its use in the synagogue. The oryx is a species of antelope, common in most parts of Africa, and formerly also in Israel (the oryx is currently being reintroduced into the wild in Israel). The oryx Shofar is black colored and straight, with a long drill hole and a trumpet-like sound. Although kosher according to Halacha, as it is straight and not bent, there is a dispute concerning its validity for performing the mitzvah.
